Job Opportunities at Thomas the Baker

Here at Thomas the Baker, we’re always looking for new and enthusiastic people to join our team in Yorkshire. We’re a fun and friendly bunch who just happen to love baking and cakes more than the average person, and we love finding more people like us. You might have stumbled upon this post, or maybe you saw the article all about our Saturday staff in the York Press? Nathan Church works in our King’s Square branch in York and stated that working for Thomas the Baker makes him “feel part of the family”, and that’s exactly how we want each and every one of our team to feel, whether they work Saturdays or seasonal work in a store, or part time or full time in the bakery. Here’s a quick rundown of roles we’re looking to fill at the moment – if you’re interested in any one of these, make sure to request an application form here. We will email…

Updates at Thomas the Baker: Halloween, Fundraising & Facebook

Phew, we just keep getting busier and busier over here at Thomas the Baker! Well, it’s to be expected in the run up to Halloween and Christmas – did you know that by the time you’re just starting to think about Christmas around now, we’ve already got your Christmas puddings and cakes in production? Anyway, spot that lovely lady in above? That’s my sister Beth, according to the press release that’s gone out to the news this week, the “smart cookie” who is the brains behind the business (no one told me!). She’s been hard at work in the Confectionary department of the bakery recently helping to develop a few new products especially for her favourite time of year, Halloween, including these four handcrafted designs on shortbread biscuits that we’re calling “Spcookies”! The four ghoulish designs are a mummified monster, spooky skull, petrifying pumpkin and a Munster. But they’re not all we’re throwing into the ring for Halloween…after we…

Christmas Jumper Day with Team Bronco

As you might know, the voice behind this blog is Simon Thomas’ daughter, Sian – while I don’t currently work in the family business (I spent my school holidays doing that and wanting to eat everything!), I do help out with the blog and social media. But my day to day job is at a Digital Marketing Agency in Ripon, Bronco. Today is Christmas Jumper Day with Save the Children UK (#ChristmasJumperDay) so we decided that we would team up to our bit to support the charity. Everyone at Bronco turned up to work today in various styles of Christmas jumpers (take a look here for some close ups and to read more about it!) and Thomas the Baker donated a few of our favourite Christmas treats in order to help raise some money for the charity – Mince Pies, Tipsy Imps and Christmas Truffles. Many people in the office donated a few pounds to get some tasty treats, and Hannah…

Recent updates: Triple Chocolate Cake & Sticky Toffee Pudding

We’ve recently been working on a couple of new recipes at Thomas the Baker that I’m especially excited about and have just released into the shops: a Triple Chocolate Cake and a Sticky Toffee Pudding. The Triple Chocolate Cake, as seen in the above picture, is a rich chocolate sponge cake containing dark Belgian chocolate chunks and topped with Belgian milk chocolate chips (these are my personal favourite ingredient in the bakery!); a generous slice of this is perfect with a cup of tea in the afternoon. It is available for only £2 in our shops. The Sticky Toffee Pudding is a super indulgent dessert; a luscious toffee pudding made with butter, dates and golden syrup, topped with lashings of our homemade sticky toffee sauce. This can be heated up in the microwave or in the oven following the instructions on the label for a taste of luxury in the evenings with a scoop of proper vanilla ice cream or…

Thomas the Baker Mince Pies

You might only just be starting to think about Christmas, but at Thomas the Baker we’ve been thinking about it for months! In fact, when I worked in the bakery a couple of years ago, I was surprised to see that they were starting to prepare for the Christmas rush at the end of summer! Now I always knew our mince pies were good, but it seems like lots of other people agree too – we’ve recently been named among the best mince pies in the country by Good Housekeeping, only just missing out on first place to Heston Blumenthal. Ours were awarded 73/100 and complimented on the delicious fruity filling, thin pastry and homemade appearance. We’re so pleased about this, particularly because ours came out above big names such as Bettys, Harrods, and Marks & Spencer. Not only do ours taste better, but they also come at a fraction of the price of other runner ups too –…

New Shop Refit: Easingwold

A major thing that’s going on over at Thomas the Baker at the moment is a huge overhaul on the shops, and the latest to receive the full makeover treatment is Easingwold. You might remember that the old colour scheme was mainly blue and white, but we decided it was time to change things around, and this sleeker, more stylish looking black shop front won out. We’ve had some great feedback from customers already about the new shops, which we always love to hear! But it’s not just the outside of the shops that is being made over: As well as refitting the interior of Easingwold shop to create a more spacious shop floor and working environment for the staff with an extension out the back, we’ve also added a new feature: a freezer for the Bake At Home range. You can now simply walk into the shop, select anything out of the freezer that you’d like to have…
