Great Taste Awards

We have a host of award winning pies and pastries available to buy at Thomas the Baker. Our classic Bakewell Tarts, true to the original recipe packed with ground almonds and fresh butter and baked fresh daily in our in store ovens, have recently been awarded 2 gold stars at the Great Taste Awards.

But our most popular sweet bake is the Sweet Mince Pie – despite being a Christmas treat, these tasty morsels can be enjoyed all year round, and have scooped more than thirteen taste awards since 1989, most recently gold at the Great Taste Awards.

Even the unassuming Yorkshire Curd Tart is a feat of excellence. Every day, Andy, our Curd Tart master, ensures that the pastry is light, not forgetting to add the juicy currants and the curd cheese to get that perfect crumbly texture – this has secured us accolades including the BBC Vegetarian Good Food Guide award for excellence on this popular product.

Our customers' favourite savoury bake is the famous Sausage Roll. Encased in our light and tasty flaky pastry, the pork filling within is a closely guarded family recipe that has been used for more than 30 years. Our master bakers know exactly the right blend of seasoning and prime pork to use for the filling. These are baked frequently throughout the day in all our shops, it's no wonder that these are a customer favourite, so much so that some insist on buying in bulk!

We're proud to say that all the beef and pork fillings packed inside our light, flaky puff pastries or award winning Pork Pies comes from the highly acclaimed and award winning R & J Yorkshire's Finest Farmers and Butchers.

Family recipes never surpassed

Your favourite picks at Thomas the Baker aren't your favourite for no reason at all – every recipe is created by hand and tried and tested in house to produce something that we're proud to call our own.

The butter pastry used for our Danish Pastries and Croissants is delicately layered to produce between 30 and 100 layers for a delicious flaky texture and melt in the mouth quality. Topped off with a variety of tasty toppings including luscious lemon curd and fondant icing, these remain a firm favourite with all our customers.

Our Chelsea Buns remain a longstanding Yorkshire favourite: brushed with butter and lightly dusted with cinnamon before being carefully hand rolled and finished off with fondant icing, the Yorkshire tradition is to cut them in half and butter them – you had better not be thinking about dieting!

At Thomas', you can be sure that your weekly (or daily!) pastries are of the highest standard, developed by our own craft bakers with ingredients chosen for their locality and quality.

Our fresh free range shell eggs are bought from a local farmer near Scarborough, and are used in many of our products including the award winning Bakewell and curd Tarts. The fresh cream for the Quiche, and the curd for our tarts comes from a local producer in South Yorkshire, and the flour in the pastry all comes from our miller in Driffield who buys directly from the farmers in Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

You might be surprised to find that many of your favourite Thomas the Baker Pies and Pastries can be bought frozen raw in store for you to bake at home at your convenience. Just ask in store and our teams will be happy to help. Perfect for parties and ideal for unexpected visitors, many can be baked direct from frozen and are ready in less than an hour.

Our Sausage Rolls, Pasties, Cheese Straws, Curd Tarts, Bakewell Tarts and a whole host of other products are all available for home baking, our teams will be happy to help you with baking advice if needed.
